Verses to Battle Fear

October 29, 2015 by Carrie

Verses to read when you're battling fear

I didn’t sleep much last night.  I’m in a season of struggling with fear and I spent a good portion of the night trying to fight it off.

Fear can easily take over, especially at night time.  Thoughts that I can throw to the wayside during the day become much harder to ignore at night.

After struggling to get my mind to rest, I finally took a Benadryl to help me sleep.

The truth is, although it helped, medicine wasn’t what I really needed.  Because I’ve given my life to Jesus, he will never leave me or forsake me.  I can trust him and the promises he’s given me from the Bible in order to successfully battle off fear.

I have and will face hard things but he will always be with me.  He is my rock-solid foundation that will never change.

Lesson learned: Jesus is better than Benadryl.

Verses To Battle Fear

(a free printable version is available at the end)

“whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.โ€ Proverbs 1:33

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.โ€ Deuteronomy 31:8

“I sought the Lord and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” Psalm 34:4

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.  When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor Him.” Psalm 91: 14-15 (this whole Psalm is a good defense against fear)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.” Psalm 34:7

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.” Psalm 27: 1,5

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.โ€ Deuteronomy 31:6

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39

(All scripture is from the ESV Bible.)

I have been living in a hidden turmoil for the past 10 years…God knows why. A cruel boss, health issues, overwhelming financial issues, and feeling like a failure. I know God, and believe in the blood. I’ve allowed Satan to attack my mind and grip me, instead of resting. Through all of this, I continue to be thankful, because my children know God, and to look to him for the answers. Please pray that I continue to fight with the word, and find the peace and rest only God can give me.

Amy–yes I will pray God gives you strength to face the hardships of your life. I’m so sorry things are so hard right now. I will pray you feel God close as he gives you strength and peace. How wonderful it is to know that your children know God! That is an amazing blessing!

I need help! I have no one to talked to. Im always afraid of what might happened around me. Im always scared of everything. Especially loosing someone. I fear that i am loosing myself too. At night i could not sleep anymore. Always think that something bad gonna happen the next day. I dont know what to do. I kept asking god whats happening to me. But i could not hear him anymore. Why?

      February 18, 2017 at 7:11 am

Lota I am so sorry that fear is such a struggle. I don’t know why this is happening to you but I do know that God loves you and he wants you to give these fears up to him and exchange them for trust in him. Sometimes our fears can get so loud and if we keep listening to the fear, it makes it harder to hear from God. I will be praying that God’s voice comes louder than your fears and worries and speaks his love and peace over your heart <3
"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, โ€œAbba, Father.โ€ - Romans 8 14-15

My whole city is needed for prayers… As much as we can get!
This past week we had out very first mass shooting in Monterrey city, Mexico, even first one in our country…. We, teachers, are scared…. I’m christian and I know Jesus is with me! But we feel our kids are flipping through our hands, and if I think and participate on the conversations at the teachers room… I feel scared as well and anxious….
Please!! Pray for me and us teachers… Specially those who have a relationship with God so we can have eyes and be arms and receive words from above to our students and the other teachers….

As soon as I saw your comment, my husband and I started praying for you and your city and students. I am so very sorry for what you are going through. You are right–Jesus is with you. I will continue to pray for God’s protection, comfort and peace to be with you and your students. I’m also praying God helps you share the hope you have in Him with those around you. <3

Deb I am so sorry. Your situation breaks my heart. Parents are supposed to love and protect their children, so when they are the ones doing harm it can be a very difficult thing to overcome. Keep these verses on your heart & I will be praying for you ๐Ÿ™‚

Carrie, you are not alone. As much as I trust God…. I still struggle with fear and more areas than I care to admit. But… having friends love and pray for me is so encouraging and helps stay the course. As does memorizing scripture and repeating it out loud in the midst. I love how you shared so many great verses.
Thanks for being authentic and sharing from your heart. And sharing with us at Project Inspire{d}. Have a blessed week my friend!

I can’t tell you the number of times God has used my friends to pray and talk me through hard things. That’s why it’s so important to be involved with a local healthy church! I’m so thankful to be surrounded by people I highly trust that will drop everything to pray when I need it. That has truly made a difference in my life.
I’m also thankful for blog friends like you! You’re so encouraging and I love how you’re always sharing about how good God is.

I just discovered your site through the Pitch perfect media kit ebook that featured you. However, I think it’s beautiful that you wrote this piece and you offered to pray for your fans. That’s amazing and takes courage in itself. I would love it if you pray for me to let God guide me as I pursue my 2016 goals for my site and let go of my fears as we move into the New Year.
Have a blessed Year Carrie ๐Ÿ™‚

I read this earlier today and have been praying that God gives you direction and freedom as you give your dreams and fears up to Him. Blogging can be so fun yet scary and at the same time and it’s so wise of you to be praying about it. I’ve been learning a lot about giving less focus to those fears and more focus on what God is doing. As He helps me replace those fears with trust in Him, I feel more free. I hope this encourages you, Kathy!
Oh wow–I didn’t know about that feature. I’d love to see it. If you get time, can you send me a link to that?

Please pray for calmness, peace, and relaxat ion within the mind body and soul for me. This helped me a lot, I have been having trouble sleeping at night for the past 2 or 3 months and it has been causing me headaches. I also try to take medicine to put me to sleep, but it too has no effect. God is good and he is with me. With prayer and reading the word tonight hopefully I can get rest tonight. God bless! โค

Thank you for sharing this! I am the same way! During the day I feel I can handle just about anything that comes my way, yet at night I become paralyzed with fear and worry. Praise music and bible verses are the only thing that gives me peace. I know that you don’t personally know me but if you could please pray that I have peace and courage when satan attacks I would be very grateful! ๐Ÿ™‚ God bless!

Just going to add this little part, I saw this post on Pinterest and replied through the Pinterest app. And then went into safari and opened up your full website. I read your story and I honestly just can’t accept that this is a coincidence. I was brought to your page. I scrolled past it the first time and then scrolled back up just to read this!! I felt like I needed to read it, that God was TELLING me to read it. I just love this feeling.

That is so cool! You’re right–that was not a coincidence! I LOVE hearing stories like this of how God comes into the daily parts of our lives so we feel loved.

  12. Amanda says

Thank you for sharing these verses. I haven’t had the relationship with God in my life that I’ve wanted. It seems I only reach out to him when I’m in a bad place. Which is probably more often than most. But I know that what I seek, is in Him. The feelings I’ve had recently of something lost or missing, has just been my desire to reach out to Him and open myself up to Him. I have anxiety for certain things, mostly getting sick. I feel as if I am going to get sick almost every single day. Numerous times a day. It’s very exhausting and it affects my work and relationships daily. I want to let go of my need for control and give it to Him I just do not know how. These verses alone have helped calm me and I know I need His love every single day. Not just when I am feeling down. I hope to continue on your site and learn from you. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me Amanda. I also struggle with wanting to have control and having trouble letting go and trusting Him. I’m grateful to hear these verses were helpful to you! I know God encouraged me to share this on my blog to help others like you! I will be praying that God gives you more and more freedom from fear and anxiety as you trust in Him. Letting go and fully trusting Him will be something you’ll never regret!

Great verses! These would be great prayer card printables. I have struggled with nighttime fears off and on for years- especially when my husband is gone at night, even if just for a couple of hours. I hear tiny noises and my mind goes wild with what could be happening right outside the door…. Like you, I know Jesus is in control of my life and I need to cling to his promises, but sometimes it’s just so hard!

Thanks for the great idea Jelli! I just updated the post and included a printable version so you guys can print them out and read them when you’re offline. I like the prayer card printable idea too!
I don’t sleep as well when my hubby is gone too. I’ll pray Jesus feels very near at all times, even when your husband is gone.

Thank you so much for sharing. I got so excited when i saw this post Carrie, i subscribed to your emails a while back after visiting your site and its not something i typically do… but there was something about you. And being a Woman of God myself, something really burst in me to see this very Word filled email.
I too was praying about fears just today. I was researching fears of the thoughts of men. When you find yourself very conscious and mindful of what people may think, as if it helps determine how we should feel about things, then it its routed in fears for sure. But today i made a resolve that what God says and my agreement with Him is what matters. So i am removing the fear of people’s judgments and perceptions of me. If they come, I will take an honest evaluation at lay them at Jesus’ feet, and trust Him to teach me what I ought to learn, if in fact i may be wrong somewhere.

But today i choose not to allow it to cripple me and inform the things i do or dont do.

I will pray for you too ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you so, so much for sharing this Kay! It’s been so encouraging to see God build up others that have similar struggles as I do. I worry too much about what other people think too but I love your perspective. The only opinion that really matters belongs to Jesus. I forget that all too often.
I’ll pray for you as well, Kay!
