This tip is so easy I feel a little stupid sharing it. I’ll do it anyway 😉
How many times have you looked at that half empty jar of salsa and wondered how long it’s been in the fridge? Then you wonder–is it still edible? Should I take the risk and eat it or should I throw it away?
We do that ALL.THE.TIME.
My memory is terrible so I never remember when the jar in question was opened. Or whether or not it’s still okay to eat. I’m more likely to go ahead and use it as long as it doesn’t smell bad. On the other hand, the hubby is usually more concerned about the age of food and worries if it’s gone bad.
This situation always creates a small debate between the hubby and I. I say it’s fine to eat, the hubby disagrees. So what usually happens is we throw the jar out for fear of food poisoning and then feel like we’ve wasted food and money.
So I found a quick and easy solution for this problem. When I open a new jar of something that might end up in the fridge as leftovers, I grab a permanent marker and write the date on the lid. That way there’s no debate about when it was opened. See, I told you it was easy! That’s your dumb but helpful tip of the day!

Not a silly tip at all! I recently posted about freezing tomato sauce in the freezer and felt a bit silly too. But if it helps others than it’s worth it! Sometimes we just don’t think of things even if they are obvious! Then we say, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?”

Thanks for the encouragement! It’s funny how I keep seeing good ideas on blogs and Pinterest and think “why didn’t I think of that!”

What a great tip. We do something similar to this. I have to say, I usually just eat whatever it is if the date is good. I guess I never realized that there was a shelf life once it was opened :S

I know I’m with you, Tara! I’m much more likely to take the risk too.
