Painting The Living Room

October 1, 2013 by Carrie

If you follow Carrie This Home on Pinterest, you’ve seen me pin A LOT of inspiration for blue paint colors.

When we first bought our house, almost every single wall was white.

Very bland.  Very boring.  Very much in need of life.

So we picked a tan paint color called Dune and loved it.  We used this tan color in several rooms in our house and it gave the life we were looking for.

Well, for awhile at least.

Here we are six years later and every time I sit in the living room I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of beige.  We have beige walls EVERYWHERE.

IMG_1133 Pinterest wasn’t around when I originally picked paint colors so I had almost zero inspiration/ideas for cool paint colors.

IMG_1137-002 I set out online {and to every local store that sold paint} to find some inspiration my new living room color.

It was so hard for me to pick a color.  I literally spent hours and hours looking at colors.  I had about a gazillion paint color sample strips taped to the walls.  After tons of searching I decided I wanted to paint the rooms a navy blue.

I wanted a deep, rich blue color like this from Our Fifth House.  I love the richness of this bold blue color and how the white accents pop against it.  We also have cherry wood colored furniture and this picture convinced me that a navy blue would work with our current furniture.

deskasanightstand I was in love and ready to make a commitment with navy blue.

On the other hand, my hubby wanted a color that was lighter.

So we compromised.  We picked Thunderhead from Valspar. It was lighter than what I wanted and darker than what The Hubby wanted.  Right smack in the middle.

MPC00030266-1 Marriage is all about compromise, right?

Now that the painting is done I can say without reservation that we picked the right color.  I love it!

Thunderhead by Valspar Before and After We decided to use the awkwardly shaped wall in front of the stairs as an accent wall.  I love the personality this color adds to the room!

What a difference an accent wall color can make! One of my favorite parts of this color is how it highlights the crisp white mantel and the lovely guitars.

A bold color on the wall will help bring out the personality of your living room The new blue paint also added a lot of life to my foyer.

{Maybe I should just call this my foyer-wanna-be-area since I really don’t have a foyer!}

The bedding is from a picture from another blog, so I’m not sure what the exact source of that bedding. I did a quick search and I found some options that look similar to the one in the picture, and you can find them (aff link) HERE. I hope that helps!

instant character! love the way it brings out the fireplace tiles, and the guitars really pop against it!

Thanks! The guitars sort of blended into the background with the old color, so seeing them pop out against the blue really makes me happy!

I’m loving the pop of color! It really adds so much. On top of that, I really love the idea of hanging the guitars on the wall. Very cool!

That is exactly what your room needed. I love it! I am about to do my first navy blue room, and I am a little freaked, since saturated colors aren’t usually my thing… but your post is inspiring!

I’m so glad this was inspiring! What really inspired me was seeing Our Fifth House’s paint colors. She uses a lot of saturated colors but they all looked awesome so I finally got my courage up to try it. I hope your project turns out well–I’d love to see it when you’re done!

Looks great! I also like the how the blue in the foyer draws your eye into the kitchen red. They look very similar in tone which is great!

It’s funny–I didn’t think much of how the blue in the living room would look compared to the red in the kitchen! I’m happy with the way it turned out and it’s nice to hear that others like it , too! Thanks so much for stopping by, Kim!

I love that blue! Such a great choice. I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of beige sometimes too, but I have such a hard time choosing colors. I might have to put this one in our house somewhere.

We’re really happy with our choice, too. It’s a really happy shade of blue so if you decide to use it I hope you’ll be as happy with it as we are!

I love this color! This is similar to one of the colors we’re going to make our master bedroom. We’re going with an indigo and grey combination. We, too, disagree on colors very often. Your compromise is certainly no compromise! Your transformation is lovely and has really ‘updated’ your living room. Well done!

      October 2, 2013 at 11:24 am

Thank you, Terry! Like you the next room on our list is our master bedroom. I was so happy with this color that I might do something similar for the master bedroom. An indigo and grey combinations sounds like a great color!
