How To Put Song Lyrics Over A Photo

One of my favorite things to do is surf on Pinterest for easy & inexpensive decoration ideas. A couple months ago I saw this cute project from Jenna at Rain On A Tin Roof. She took lyrics from one of her favorite songs and made artwork out of it. Cute, right?

Then one day I thought “why not put one of my favorite song lyrics over a picture and use that as an easy DIY decoration?”

So I did!

This project was easy, fun, and left me with a piece of art that’s close to my heart.

Every time I hear John Mayer’s song “Daughters” I have to stop and listen to it. This song brings me back to a pretty bittersweet time in my life. I was pregnant with my first child (the one in the photo) while my Dad was losing his battle with cancer. While listening to that song I would think of the fond memories I had with my Dad and daydream about fun times I would soon be having with my daughter.

Since this sweet little girl and those lovely words have a special place in my heart, I made something to reflect that.

Here’s How To Do It!

Pick out some song lyrics and a photo.

Go to PicMonkey.com and upload your photo.

Once your photo uploads, click on the little letter icon (the big T and little t) on the left side to add text.

Choose the font you like and click on it. This step may take awhile since there’s so many to choose from!

Click the Add Text button and a little box will appear over your picture. Type your song lyrics in the box.

Changing Text Box Size

If you’re typing in more than a couple words, chances are the words will need a bigger box to fit in. In this case, while the box is highlighted (meaning the little box is around the text) click and drag the left or right side of the box until the text fits in. Also, the corner circles can be dragged to make the text box bigger.

Moving The Text

With the box around the text, put your mouse over the middle of the box until the cross appears. Click and drag the box where you want. In my picture I wanted the text in different parts of the picture, so I made a separate box for each part of the lyric.

Changing Text Size

There are two ways to do this:

While the box is highlighted, click and drag the any corner circle of the box until the text is the right size.
Highlight the text. In the text legend under Size, change the number to the desired size. In the picture above, the Sample Text is in size 274.

Changing Text Orientation

If you want the text to be on a slant (like the red arrows) drag the circle in the top middle of the text box.

Changing Text Color

There are two ways to change the text color using the text legend (pictured below)

While the text is highlighted, drag the little circle in the top left hand corner directly to the color you want.
If you’re looking for a specific color, use this website to find the html code for the desired color. Then highlight the text and type the code in the text legend on the top right side (where ffffff is)

Helpful Hints

You can change the font, color, and size of words or letters within the same text box (like the word color in the example below) Highlight the individual letter or word and change the font, color, or size. The rest of the letters within the box won’t change.

Text can be BOLD and left/right/center aligned using these buttons:

Play Around

Keep messing around and trying new things until you get the look you want. I learned everything in this tutorial just by messing around.
