Hello, wonderful readers of Carrie This Home! My name is Christie, from Sparkles of Sunshine. Since I’m a follower of Carrie This Home, I am absolutely thrilled to be guest posting here today! Carrie’s been kind enough to let me to share one of my recent projects with you, and I’m on pins and needles hoping you’ll like it! There’s nothing I like more than taking something old and giving it new life, which is exactly what I did to a chair recently. I hope you’re ready to see the amazing transformation of my Antique Chair Revival, because I can’t wait to show it to you!
When I first saw this chair, I knew it had another life ahead of it. It came into my home along with a dining table and four other chairs given to us by friends who were moving. This chair was a little lonely since the other Captain’s Chair was missing, so it needed a new purpose. I decided it would work perfectly in my new office space…after a little makeover, of course. Here’s a glimpse at what this chair looked like before I started this project.
The harp back and curved arm features of this antique chair make it a beauty, but the dark wood and tapestry seat really outdated the piece. The chair was a little wobbly, so the first step was to fix that. My husband took the chair apart and reassembled it with wood glue and screws to secure the joints. Now it’s time for the makeover to truly begin!
My partners in crime for this project were Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Delicate (purchased from Michaels) and FolkArt Home Decor White Wax (purchased from Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts). Since I used chalk paint for this project, no sanding or priming was needed before painting. I painted the chair with 2 coats of paint, then covered any spots that needed extra coverage with a 3rd coat. This was my first time using Americana Decor chalky finish paint, and it is thicker and dries faster than other chalk paints I’ve used. Be sure to use quick, even strokes when using this paint to ensure a smooth coverage.
This chair looks so much better already, but I wasn’t finished yet! Once the chair was painted and dry, it was time to add the wax finish. Using a brush, I applied the white wax in light strokes to create a whitewashed look to the chair. I waited 10 minutes, then used a soft, lint-free cloth is buff the wax and really make this piece shine!
I love the way the sunny yellow color peeks through the white wax, don’t you? It really accents the texture of the chalk paint.
I reupholstered the seat with fabric I had leftover from another project. I purchased it at Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts. I really love the texture of this fabric because it’s super soft and doesn’t shed. Once I screwed the seat back into place, my project was completed. It’s time to admire all of my hard work!
Just check out this Antique Chair Revival…isn’t it so much more stylish now? Yes, the paint, wax and new fabric certainly brought this chair back to life. I can’t wait to get my new office space completed so it can take up residence in its new home! Let’s take one last look at a before and after, shall we?
