How To Organize Sewing Supplies

Do you have one of those friends that loves organizing?  You know–that friend you would LOVE to come over to help you tackle all that clutter and bring life into those messy areas of your home?

I do.  Her name is Morgan and she has genius organizing ideas over at her blog Morganize With Me.  Today I’m excited to announce that she’ll be sharing one of those genius ideas here with us!

So, let’s get started with Morgan!

I’m very excited to be here today and to get to share some of my organizing passion with you all! Thanks so much Carrie for having me. (And don’t worry, if you are not into sewing, you’ll still be able to use these organizing tips for any type of hobby, rather it be jewelry making, scrapbooking, knitting….you name it!)

As much as I would LOVE to have my own space (or room – in my dreams) to fully designate to my sewing hobby, this is just not a reality. And I don’t think it will be any time soon. So in an effort to solve this problem, I have creatively turned to my dining room hutch as the spot to house all of my sewing supplies. Therefore, when I do want to working on my sewing, all I need to do is pull everything out and use my dining room table to spread out and start stitching away. The cupboards of the hutch hold my machines and then the drawers provide room for all of my supplies.

The simplest way I found to organize the hutch drawers was with some deep drawer dividers that I found at an office supply store. They fit perfectly and are nice and deep to help contain all of my sewing necessities. This system allows for me to keep the different tools organized by categories and then I can also pull out the entire drawer tray whenever I need to have all of the tools closer to where I’m working.

I organize all of the items by categories. The elastic goes together, the thread is in groups of like colors, and the buttons and bobbins all have their own spots. Everything is put in their own home sweet home.

So whether you have a passion for cake baking, candle making or crafting, you can create a simple way to organize your supplies just by looking for existing furniture in your home that can serve as a dual purpose. Or keep an eye on Craigslist for a great piece of furniture – dresser, hutch, armoires etc. – that could serve as a great spot for you to create a space for your hobby. I have grand plans for our next home to either repurpose an armoires for my sewing station along with the need to also re-finish my outdated hutch. Always planning…

What hobby do you need to better organize in your home? What simple steps would give you more space to get those projects done?
