Butterfly Activity For Kids

Butterfly activity for kids

This week I experienced my first snow day as a parent.

Completely opposite experience from when I was a child.  Instead of being totally excited, I was a little disappointed.

Want to know what my first thought was?

What am I going to do with the kids ALL day?

Don’t get me wrong.  I love my kids and playing with them.  But after several hours of activities, chores, and playing I have a hard time thinking of fun things to do.  I simply run out of ideas.

So today I’m sharing a simple activity,  just in case you’re like me and tend to run out of ideas :).

Butterfly Activity For Kids

My daughter loves butterflies and pretending to be one.  We’ve read a lot about how caterpillars change into butterflies and she loves to act it out.

First she pretends to be a caterpillar.  I encourage her to crawl around on the floor like a caterpillar but she’s usually too excited about the next part.

Then I lay a blanket on the floor and have her lay on it like this:

I roll her up in the blanket and we pretend it’s a cocoon.  (I have to give credit to the hubby for thinking of this part)

We count to ten while she pretends to change into a butterfly in the cocoon.  This is a great time to sneak in a small science lesson about metamorphosis!

Then at ten she squiggles out of the blanket and pretends to be a butterfly!  She does this by running around the house flapping her arms like wings.  It’s pretty hilarious to watch.  This also burns a lot of that energy!

Then we repeat the whole process.  Like 20 more times.  Little kids LOVE repetition!  I may get burned out after the 10th time but I know through this we’re doing several good things at once:

What do you like to do with your kids when you’re stuck at home?  I could use a few new ideas;)
